The structures are thought to have been constructed in three phases with the first being as early as 3000 bc. This phase would include the earthen structure or "henge". The second phase may have been as long as 500 years. It is theorized to have been the construction of the Aubrey Holes which appear to have been "post holes" for timber structures of some kind. 2950 bc - 2400 bc.

The final phase (it is thought), was the construction and erection of the Sarsen Circle and Bluestones. 2550 bc -1600 bc. The blue stones used in the construction of the stone structures are each in excess of four tons and therefore would have been an engineering marvel to move them at that time.

There exists on site a "Heel Stone" as it is called, that probably originally stood upright but now leans to one side. The purpose of this stone is not readily identifiable. End? >
