Mathew 24:1-24:2 states: Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. "Do you see all these things?" he asked. "I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

Approximately 40 years after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (70 a.d.), the city was destroyed by the Romans and about 1.1 million Jews were killed.

During the destruction of the city, the temple was set on fire. The heat from the fire melted the golden gilding on the ceiling which, as it ran down the sides of the walls, cooled in crevices. After the fire, Romans had to pry apart and smash the stones to extract the gold leaf. Thus fulfilling the prophecy as no stones remained stacked.
