Late autumn of 1966 saw one of the first recorded sighting of what would later be called the Mothman. This first in a series of sightings was reported by several men assigned the task of digging a fresh grave for a designated burial within the vicinity of Cleninden, West Virginia. From nearby trees a "brown human being" took flight and the grave diggers watched in amazement as the creature flew by overhead. Although there were many more sightings, one account of particular interest took place that very same evening. In it, a terrified couple describe the creature chasing them as they attempted to escape in their car. This incredible chase took place less than eighty miles away from the reported sighting at the cemetery near Cleninden! --Homes throughout the little towns were plagued with unearthly noises and ghostly manifestations while mysterious aerial lights traveled silently overhead seemingly on a regular schedule. Winged monsters and frightening apparitions terrified the population as automobiles stalled and telephones and TV sets ran amok. A Red Cross Bloodmobile filled with fresh blood was pursued along a darkened highway by a weird flying machine. Domestic animals were found slaughtered and mutilated in pastoral farm fields. Innocent people lived in surrealistic horror, haunted by the fearsome demonic "Bird" and besieged by legions of strange beings (some of which arrived in ordinary-looking automobiles). --ƒ ƒ From: "The Mothman Prophecies" by John A.
