A
rescue effort was underway and the final radio contact was with Lt. Taylor
at 7:04 which was nearly five hours since take off. The planes would have
completely exhausted their fuel supply by 8:00 pm and it is expected that
they made forced landings about that time somewhere east of the Florida
peninsula.
The
two X's mark the difference between where
Lt. Taylor thought they were versus where they most likely were actually
at when contact was lost.
No trace of
the aircraft were ever found in spite of an exhaustive effort to locate
the aircraft for five days. In addition to the loss of flight 19, one search
aircraft (a PBM patrol plane), was never found or heard from again after
it took off to aid in the flight 19 search.
