Bermuda Triangle:

The lore of the Bermuda Triangle, where ships and planes disappear in numbers too large to be happenstance, grew with the loss of Flight 19 on December 5th 1945.

Five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers took off from Fort Lauderdale on a typical training exercise. Less than two hours into the training exercise, flight leader Lt. Charles Carroll Taylor indicated via radio that he had become disoriented.

"Both of my compasses are out.. I'm over land, but it's broken. I'm sure I'm in the Keys, but I don't know how far down and I don't know how to get to Fort Lauderdale."

A five day search of 250,000 square miles of ocean failed to discover any trace of Flight 19. The training mission was established with the flight plan that should have taken them through the northernmost of the Bahamas. Although from the air the Bahamas can look somewhat like the Keys, how did the airmen become so disoriented as to believe that they were so far south?. Why did both compasses fail when they had checked out in the preflight inspection as operational?
