In 1647 a French explorer named Samuel de Champlain created a map naming the Green Mountains of Vermont "Verd Mont" or Green Mountain. The name Vermont is derived from the name found on that map.

Adopted in 1923 the state flag features the Virginia coat of arms on a dark blue background. the coat of arms includes a tall pine tree, a cow, bales of hay and sheaves of wheat. The Green Mountains of Vermont are seen in the distance behind the lone pine tree. Pine boughs are on each side shield. The name "VERMONT" and the state motto "FREEDOM AND UNITY" are on a red banner beneath the shield. At the the top of the shield is a stag's head.
