The state of Ohio took it's name from the Ohio River. The Iroquois Indians called the river Ohio whcih means "large beautiful river."

John Eisemann designed the Ohio burgee (this swallowtail design) and it was officially adopted as the state flag in 1902. The 13 stars represent the original states of the union; the 4 stars added to the point of the triangle represent the next four states added to the union (Ohio being the 17th state admitted).
