Captain John Mason received a grant for land in 1629. He named this land New Hampshire after the English county of Hampshire where he was raised. New Hampshire was one of the original 13 colonies in the "new world".

The official New Hampshire State Flag bears the state seal centered on a field of blue and surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves with nine stars interspersed representing the order of admission into the union as New Hampshire was the ninth state.
