The official state flag of Indiana was adopted in 1917 as designed by Paul Hadley of Mooresville, Indiana who was the flag design contest winner sponsored by the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). It was Indiana's 100th anniversary of statehood in 1916 that prompted the redisgn contest.

There are 19 golden stars on a blue field. The 13 stars in the outer circle represent the 13 original colonies of the United States of America; five more states were admitted to the union before Indiana and they are represented in a half circle with lines radiating out to them. The final and largest star rests atop the flame of the torch of Liberty and represents the state of Indiana.
