On a field of azure blue is an ornamental white shield with three grapevines, each bearing three clusters of purple grapes. The states motto is displayed on a white ribbon below the shield and it reads "He who Transplanted Sustains Us" The vines stand for the first settlers and settlements of English people who began migrating from Massachusetts in the 1630's. The English settlements of Connecticut were compared to transplanted grapevines. This official Connecticut state flag was adopted 1897.
