The name "Colorado" is Spanish for "red". The Colorado River water had a reddish color due to the color of the soil that washed into it.

Originally designed by Andrew Carlisle Johnson, Colorado adopted it's official state flag on June 5, 1911.

The white in the flag symbolizes Colorado's snowcapped mountains, the blue symbolizes clear blue skies, the red represents the reddish soil found in Colorado, while the golden yellow center of the "C" represts the Sun. Attached to the flag is a cord of gold and silver, intertwined with gold and silver tassels.
