Shooting matches at Camp Perry in Ohio began in 1907 and rapidly developed into a prestigious annual event that continues to this day.

In 1910, members of the Arizona Rifle Team noted that all of "state" rifle teams carried flags and as the Arizona team had no flag, brought this to the attention of Colonel Charles Wilfred Harris, then serving as adjutant general of the Arizona National Guard. Colonel Harris designed the original Arizona State Flag which depicts the red and yellow colors found in the flags flown by the Spanish Conquistedores led by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.
